Karol WojtyłaKarol Jozef Wojtyla was born on May 18th, 1920 in Wadowice as the second son of Karol Wojtyla and Emilia Kaczorowska. He was baptized on June 20th, 1920.
He was a very fit and talented  boy . He regularly played football and went skiing. A very important element in the life of Karol were sightseeing tours, as well as walks around the area of Wadowice.
On April 13th , 1929 the nine-year old Karol had to face a painful life tragedy - his mother died at the age of 45, which affected his entire family. On December 5th , 1932 at the age of 26,  just three years after the death of his mother, his brother Edmund died – a very promising doctor.

Since September 1930 , Karol Wojtyla began attending the 8-form Marcin Wadowita National High School for Boys in Wadowice. Karol, the high school student was under the tender and loving care of his father. From an early age he served the mass and presided altar servers. In the first year of high school he met a man who had a great influence on him. It was Father Kazimierz Figlewicz. While attending high school Karol became interested in theatre and drama. On May 14th , 1938 Karol Wojtyla passed his Matura exam. He was one of the most outstanding students, not only in the aspect of learning. On May 27th , 1938 he bid farewell to high school, delivering a speech on behalf of the graduates .
Then, Karol Wojtyla began his studies in October 1938 at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University, and therefore moved with his father to Krakow. From the beginning of his stay in Krakow, Wojtyla became absorbed in both intellectual and artistic life. New acquaintances and the special atmosphere of Krakow encouraged the creation of poetry. The outbreak of war took away the possibility to continue his studies from Karol.
His father infected him with a passion for the mountains and for active leisure time. However, at the age of 21, Karol Wojtyla was all alone, because after a serious illness his dad died in 1941.  In the autumn of 1941, along with his friends, Karol founded the Rhapsodic Theatre, which staged its first performance on November 1st , 1941 . It was a great passion of the future pope. Everyone thought that talent and love for the theatre would push Karol Wojtyla into becoming a professional actor. Therefore, it was a great surprise when he chose theological studies . The experience of acting , however, accompanied him throughout his life and helped him play the most important role he ever had to play.

On November 1st, 1946, Cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha ordained a priest Karol Wojtyla, who on Nov. 15th  went to Rome via Paris. In 1958, Karol Wojtyla, at the age of 38  became the youngest bishop in Poland and was nicknamed "the smiling bishop." The period of the bishopric of Karol Wojtyla also coincided with the Second Vatican Council in which he actively participated .
During the second conclave, convened after the death of John Paul I in 1978, Wojtyla was elected pope and took the name John Paul II.

From 16th  October 1978 to April 2nd, 2005 - The Pope.

John Paul IIJohn Paul II was pope for 26 and a half years. During his papacy he beatified and canonized, and also appointed more cardinals than any previous pope. John Paul II was the first Pope from Poland, as well as the first after more than 450 years Bishop of Rome, who was of non-Italian origin. His entire life was devoted to Mary - Mother of God. During his pilgrimages to Poland in 1979, 1983, 1987, 1991, 1997, 1999, the Pope repeatedly visited Czestochowa and Jasna Gora Monastery. He owed his miraculous deliverance to Mary during the attack on his person on May 13th, 1981 in St. Peter's Square, Rome . In Fatima he thanked Mary for his salvation. On June 19th, 1983 in Jasna Gora Monastery, the Pope dedicated his shot-through belt as a votive offering to the Pauline Fathers. The attitude of the Pope in the face of suffering and disease has become a source of hope for millions of people.
A characteristic feature of the pontificate of John Paul II were his numerous travels abroad, through which he earned the nickname the Pope - Pilgrim. He took 104 trips, visiting all the inhabited continents. In many places visited by John Paul II, no pope had ever set foot before him.

John Paul II was always happy to meet young people and devoted much attention to them.
The Pope perceived the young as the future of the world, which is why he tried with all his strength to reach the widest possible crowd of young people with his teachings.
Since the early 90s, John Paul II suffered from progressive Parkinson's disease . Despite numerous speculations and suggestions on his resigning which escalated in the media, especially during the successive visits of the Pope in hospital, he held the post until his death.
The sudden deterioration of the Pope's health began on February 1st, 2005. John Paul II died on April 2nd  at 9.37 in the evening. The information shocked the world. On April 7th, 2005 the testament of John Paul II was published.
The funeral of Pope John Paul II was held on Friday, April 8th, 2005 , the coffin made of simple planks of cypress wood (the symbol of immortality ) was set directly on the carpet, spread on the pavement of St. Peter's Square because such was OUR POPE'S wish . He lived modestly and the funeral was to be humble.
On May 13th , 2005 , the process of beatification of John Paul II began, by many called – John Paul the Great. Saint John Paul II was canonized together with Pope Saint John XXIII on 27th April 2014 nine years after his death.
